Synopsis

This powerful drama reveals what happens when a Vietnamese American household receives a surprise visit from a long-lost patriarch after he fails at a get-rich-quick scheme.

Richard Van

Director's Biography

Richard Van is a San Francisco-based filmmaker of Vietnamese descent. He is one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. Richard's fictional and documentary works often look at familial interactions within different cultural contexts and issues of memory, childhood, and representation. His 2017 film, Audition, was screened at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival, won best live-action short at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and is nominated for a Student BAFTA.

Richard holds an MFA Film directing from the California Institute of the Arts and a B.A. in Philosophy from University of California, Berkeley. His CalArts thesis film, HIẾU, a dark comedy-drama about a Vietnamese-American family, will premiere at the 2019 Festival de Cannes for its Cinefondation Selection.
